Q & A

  1. Can I learn ?
  2. What will I learn on the guitar ?
  3. How much do I have to practice ?

Can I Learn ?

The answer for the overwhelming majority of people is yes. We don't believe there is any genetic predisposition to play music. Over the 11 years The By Ear Musician has been in business we have taught many people to play that were actually told by others that they would never play. Good teaching in a fun environment produces good results.

What will I learn on the guitar ?

The first thing that all students learn is how much fun and how easy it is to play a musical instrument.

Another goal for all guitar students is to learn to fingerpick. That means not using a flat pick. Flat pick techniques are taught when specific styles are studied.

A third goal is the perception of rhythm. Every musician must have an inherent sense of rhythm. We have techniques for teaching even those that believe they are severely rhythm challenged.

A fourth goal is the reading of tablature and traditional notation rhythm. We do not recommend that most guitarist learn traditional pitch notation until they are experienced players and have defined long range goals.

How much do I have to practice ?

Practice is for those that have decided music is not only enjoyable but also a serious study.

Most simply want to relax and have some fun playing music. While we do have a strong curriculum providing what we believe will give a student strong fundamentals we also recognize that not everyone is going to be a studio musician, play in the church band or teach music. We provide a practical approach to fulfilling the needs and goals of all students from campfire music to composition.
