Do By Ear Musicians read notes?

Playing By Ear does not mean that you don't learn to read notes. It means learning to play with feeling instead being machine like. Many people study music for years but never learn to play. At the By Ear Musician we teach you how to have fun with music first and see how far you want to take it. Many are not interested in learning to read music because they can have fun playing without it.

Can I learn to play?

The answer for the overwhelming majority of people is yes. We don't believe there is any genetic predisposition to play music. Over the 14 years The By Ear Musician has been in business we have taught many people to play that were actually told by others that they would never play. Good teaching in a fun environment produces good results.

What will I learn?

The first thing that all students learn is how much fun and how easy it is to play a musical instrument.

A second goal is the perception of rhythm. Every musician must have an inherent sense of rhythm. We have techniques for teaching even those that believe they are severely rhythm challenged.

How much do I have to practice?

Practice is for those that have decided music is not only enjoyable but also a serious study. Until you decide that music is a vocational choice you aren't allowed to practice. We want you to just play and have fun, and we do lots of that.

Most simply want to relax and have some fun playing music. While we do have a strong curriculum providing what we believe will give a student strong fundamentals we also recognize that not everyone is going to be a studio musician, play in the church band or teach music. We provide a practical approach to fulfilling the needs and goals of all students from campfire music to composition.
